Trauma & PTSD Treatment
Specialized trauma and PTSD care using EMDR, ART, and ILF neurofeedback to process trauma and calm the nervous system.
Trauma is at the heart of what we do at Rising Minds. Whether it happened recently or decades ago, whether it feels 'severe' or you've never quite named it as trauma, we help you process what happened so it stops running your life today. Using EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, and ILF neurofeedback, we work directly with how trauma is stored in the body and brain — not just talk about it.
Trauma Is at the Heart of Our Work
At Rising Minds, treating trauma isn't one service among many — it's the foundation everything else is built on. Anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, and difficulty regulating emotion often trace back to experiences the body never fully processed. When we address the trauma underneath, the symptoms that brought you in often begin to ease as well.
You don't need a dramatic story to justify getting help. If something happened that still affects how you think, feel, or react, it's worth talking about — in person in Bountiful and via telehealth across Utah and Idaho.
Our approach centers on the idea that the body keeps its own record of what happened, separate from the story you might tell about it. That's why trauma-focused work looks different from talking through your week — it's aimed at how an experience is stored, not just how you describe it.
Trauma Is More Common Than You Think
When people hear the word trauma, they often picture combat veterans — and while military trauma is real and serious, it's far from the whole picture. Most people who walk through our door are dealing with something else entirely, and most people carry some form of trauma even if they've never called it that.
We regularly work with adults who were abused as children or teens, women recovering from sexual assault or other violence, and people who lived through shootings, domestic abuse, a frightening medical experience, or homelessness. Sometimes trauma shows up more quietly — a child rejected by peers or teachers because of a disability, or racism that shaped how safe someone felt growing up.
- Childhood or adolescent abuse
- Sexual assault or other violence
- Domestic abuse
- Witnessing or surviving a shooting
- Frightening medical experiences
- Homelessness or housing instability
- Rejection or discrimination tied to a disability or race
How PTSD and Complex Trauma Show Up
Trauma doesn't always look like what you'd expect. It can surface years — even decades — after the original event, quietly shaping your mood, your relationships, and the way you talk to yourself. Even trauma you've filed away as 'not that bad' can still be triggering negative self-talk, anxiety, or relationship difficulties in the present.
For some people, trauma also contributes to suicidal thoughts. If that's part of what you're carrying, you don't have to manage it on your own.
- Flashbacks or intrusive memories
- Nightmares or disrupted sleep
- Hypervigilance — feeling constantly on edge
- Avoiding people, places, or reminders
- Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected
- Persistent negative self-talk or shame
How We Treat Trauma
We use approaches built specifically to help the brain and body process trauma, not just discuss it. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) both help reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their emotional charge and no longer intrude on daily life.
Many clients also benefit from ILF (Infralow Frequency) neurofeedback, a gentle, non-invasive approach that works directly with the nervous system to help calm the fight-flight-freeze response that trauma can leave switched on. We often combine these tools, tailoring the pace and approach to what feels right for you.
Which combination makes sense depends on you — how the trauma is showing up, how your nervous system tends to respond under stress, and what pace feels workable given everything else going on in your life. We talk through the options together rather than applying one protocol to everyone.
A Safety-First Pace
Trauma work only helps if it feels safe, so we move at a pace you can tolerate. With EMDR and ART, you don't have to narrate every detail of what happened for the process to work — your therapist guides the session so you can process the memory without reliving it out loud.
We check in often, build coping skills alongside trauma processing, and adjust course whenever something isn't working for you. DBT skills are often woven in to help you stay regulated between and during sessions.
“The goal is to take away the memory's power over your present.”
The Goal: Taking Away Its Power, Not Erasing the Past
We're not trying to erase your history or pretend it didn't happen. The goal is to take away the memory's power over your present — so a flashback doesn't hijack your afternoon, so a trigger doesn't spiral into days of anxiety, so you can think about what happened without it controlling how you feel about yourself right now.
Progress looks different for everyone, and there's no fixed number of sessions we promise. What we can offer is a steady, structured process aimed at real relief.
Many clients describe it less as forgetting and more as the memory finally settling into the past where it belongs, instead of feeling like it's happening all over again every time something reminds them of it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about trauma & ptsd treatment at Rising Minds.
I wasn't in the military — can I still have PTSD?
Absolutely. PTSD isn't limited to combat. Far more often we see people whose trauma came from childhood or teen abuse, sexual assault, domestic abuse, medical trauma, homelessness, or other frightening experiences. Even trauma that feels 'minor' or happened long ago can leave a lasting mark worth taking seriously.
Do I have to talk about the details of what happened?
No. With EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) in particular, the brain can reprocess a memory without you narrating every detail out loud. You stay in control of what you share, and we never push faster than feels safe.
Which trauma approach is right for me — EMDR, ART, or neurofeedback?
It depends on your history and how your nervous system responds. EMDR and ART reprocess distressing memories so they lose their charge, while ILF neurofeedback calms a dysregulated nervous system. For many people, combining a reprocessing approach with neurofeedback works best. Your therapist will recommend a starting point and adjust as you go.
Can trauma therapy make me feel worse before it helps?
Good trauma work is built around safety first. We start by helping you feel grounded and in control, and we pace the deeper work to what your system can handle — the goal is relief, not overwhelm.
