What We Treat

Stress & Burnout

Stress and burnout therapy in Bountiful, UT — tools to manage overwhelm, regulate emotions, and restore balance.

Stress is not inherently harmful. Short bursts of it sharpen focus and help you perform. The damage comes from stress that never resolves — a nervous system held in a state meant to be temporary, for months or years at a time.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Irritability
  • Exhaustion
  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Reduced performance

Burnout is not just severe stress

They are different states. Under chronic stress you generally still care — often too much — and feel overloaded, urgent, and hyper-engaged. Burnout is what follows when that has gone on long enough: not too much feeling but too little. Disengagement, flatness, cynicism, and a sense of futility about work that once mattered.

The distinction matters because the remedies differ. Stress responds to load management, boundaries, and recovery. Burnout is rarely solved by a vacation — people routinely return from two weeks off and feel the dread reappear within a day, because the conditions that produced it are unchanged.

The signs people tend to dismiss

  • Sunday-evening dread that starts earlier each week
  • Cynicism or irritability toward people you used to enjoy
  • Exhaustion that a full night's sleep doesn't touch
  • Difficulty concentrating, or re-reading the same paragraph repeatedly
  • Physical symptoms — headaches, gut trouble, jaw clenching, frequent illness
  • Numbing out most evenings to stop thinking
  • Feeling like you're failing at everything while working harder than ever

Why self-care advice often doesn't fix it

Burnout is usually driven by structural conditions — workload, insufficient control, unfairness, absent recognition, values conflict — not by an individual failure to relax properly. Advice to take a bath or download a meditation app can therefore add insult, implying the problem is that you haven't tried hard enough at recovering.

That does not mean nothing helps. It means useful work addresses the actual drivers: what you can influence, what has to be renegotiated, which boundaries have quietly disappeared, and what the exhaustion has been protecting you from noticing.

How we help

DBT skills provide concrete tools for tolerating distress and regulating emotion when you're past capacity. CBT addresses the beliefs that keep the pressure on — that rest must be earned, that saying no is a failure, that everything will collapse without you. Individual therapy holds it together and adapts it to your actual circumstances.

Sessions are available in person in Bountiful and via telehealth across Utah and Idaho, including evening telehealth for people whose schedule is a large part of the problem.

Common Questions

What's the difference between stress and burnout?

Under chronic stress you usually still care — often too much — and feel overloaded and urgent. Burnout is what comes after: disengagement, flatness, and cynicism about work that once mattered. Stress responds to load management and recovery; burnout usually needs the underlying conditions to change.

I took a vacation and still feel burned out. Why?

Because time off pauses the load without changing what created it. People routinely return from two weeks away and feel the dread reappear within a day. That's a sign the drivers — workload, control, fairness, recognition, values conflict — need attention, not that you rested wrong.

Can therapy help if my job is the problem?

Yes. We can't change your employer, but a lot of what keeps burnout going is negotiable: which boundaries have quietly disappeared, what you actually control, and beliefs like rest having to be earned. That work tends to make the situation more workable even when the job stays the same.

Do you offer appointments outside work hours?

We offer telehealth across Utah and Idaho, including evening availability, which is often the practical option when the schedule itself is a large part of the problem. Contact us to check current openings.
